K1 visa interview overview

The format of the K1 visa interview may differ from embassy to embassy, but generally speaking, it’s a conversation about you, your partner, and your relationship. It aims to determine whether your relationship is genuine or not.

After the National Visa Center schedules your visa interview appointment, they will send you and your petitioner an email with the appointment date and time. At this point, you have already submitted all required civil documents and filed obligatory forms. When you receive your date, you can start preparation for the interview:

  • Schedule and complete a medical exam
  • Register for Courier Service
  • Gather documents required for K1 visa interview

On the scheduled date and time, go to the US Embassy or Consulate with all required documents. A consular officer will interview you in person and determine your eligibility for a fiance visa. The process should last something between 15 and 20 minutes. If a fiance has children and plans to bring them to the US as K2 nonimmigrants, they should also attend the interview. However, if they plan to come to the US later, they will have a separate interview appointment. Your petitioner/sponsor doesn’t need to attend the visa interview; however, it’s highly encouraged in some Embassies. Moreover, as a part of the interview process, you will have your fingerprint scanned.

Note that an interview doesn’t give you a guarantee of receiving a visa or being admitted to the US. This is why your foreign fiance shouldn’t make permanent financial commitments, like selling property, quitting a job, or making any travel arrangements.

Tips on preparing for a K1 visa interview

After receiving your mail with an interview date, the first thing that you should do is to schedule a medical examination with an authorized physician. Sometimes it may take a few days or weeks, so it’s better to take the earliest date to be ready before the interview. After your medical exam is scheduled, you can proceed with gathering documents for the interview. Note that if you forget something, the consular officer won’t be able to process your visa, and it will result in extra time waiting or even denial.

K1 visa interview checklist: What to bring to the fiance visa interview?

Preparation of the document package is the applicant’s responsibility. Use our handy K1 visa interview checklist to know what you should bring to the interview:

  • Appointment Letter sent by NVC
  • Passport—It must be valid for six months beyond the intended date of entry into the US
  • Photos—two identical color photos that meet the general Photo Requirements
  • Printed DS-260 Confirmation page
  • Supporting documents

The Consulate will return all the original documents after the interview, but some photocopies may be kept. Also, there are some extra K1 visa interview requirements that you need to cover beforehand:

  1. All the non-English must be translated. And if any weren’t sent to the NVC because of the translation process, you need to take them with you to the visa interview.
  2. All the fees must be paid.

If you can’t come to your interview, contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate and reschedule it as soon as possible. If you don’t contact any of them within one year of receiving your appointment letter, your case may be terminated and your fiance’s visa petition canceled. Note that fees are not refundable.

How to behave during a fiance visa interview?

Even though a visa interview is a nerve-wracking time, you need to calm your nerves as a lot is at stake. Here are some tips on behaving during the interview:

  1. Be confident. Nervous and uncomfortable people immediately raise suspicion.
  2. Memorize important dates. Even if remembering dates is not your thing, you need to prove that you care about your fiance and your dates are essential to you.
  3. Dress smartly. As with any interview, your appearance and body language can have a huge influence on how you’ll be perceived.
  4. Be prepared for the K1 visa interview questions. Answer calmly and confidently.

If you are genuinely in love with your fiance, be confident in your case as it’s only a formality, and you shouldn’t worry about passing the interview. But it’s always good to come prepared and know what to expect.

K1 visa interview questions

Memorizing all the K1 visa interview questions and answers by heart is not the best idea as you may sound like a robot. And if your relationship is genuine, there is no need for that. It’s better to have an open discussion with your partner about any topics you have not touched yet, but they are in the common K1 questionnaire. So, when you have to answer it again, make it as natural as possible.

You may be asked questions about you, like:

  • What are your name and birthday?
  • What is your nationality?
  • Have you ever been to the US before?
  • Do you have children?
  • Have you ever been an applicant for a fiancé visa before?

Also, you’ll need to be ready to answer personal questions about your fiance, like:

  • What is the name/age/birthday of your fiance?
  • What is their job?
  • What is the color of your partner’s eyes?
  • Have you met each other’s parents? If you haven’t, why not?
  • Has your fiancé been married before?

And of course, you’ll be asked a lot about your relationship and wedding plans. In this section, don’t be shy, give more details about how you fall in love, what you like to do together, what exactly you love about your partner. You might be asked questions like:

  • When and where have you met?
  • How many times have the two of you met in person? When?
  • How long have you been in a relationship before getting engaged?
  • How do you maintain your long-distance relationship? Is it difficult for you?
  • Where and when are you planning to have the wedding?
  • Will your family be able to be at your wedding?

The rule of thumb is not to hesitate to answer the questions in the interview, be genuine and calm.

What to do after the K1 visa interview?

After the interview, you’ll know if your visa is approved or not. You may even receive your actual visa on the day of the interview, but usually, it takes around a week.

If your visa is approved

You’ll be notified how to receive a visa and passport. The visa will be placed on a page in your passport (don’t forget to check for errors immediately). It’s valid for up to 6 months and is valid for 90 days after admission in the US. After approval, you are good to go and plan your trip to the US and the future wedding.

If your visa is denied

You will be informed of the reason for denial by the consular officer. You will receive a consultation on the steps to take and whether you can add any information or submit for a waiver. Some k1 visa applications require further processing, and you’ll be notified if that’s the case. You may reapply for the k1 visa if your circumstances change, or you can choose to tie the knot in your fiance’s country and then apply for the spouse immigration visa.

When you have a strong case and genuine relationship, passing a k1 visa interview is not a problem. The process will inevitably cause some stress, but you need to harness it, use our checklist to be prepared for the interview, and get that desired fiance visa approval.
